Bible Gateway Review: Spurgeon & The Psalms

BibleGateway gifted me with a copy of Spurgeon and the Psalms to review. This beautiful, little book is the perfect way to encounter God in your devotional time.

Each page includes a passage from Charles Spurgeon's teachings related to a psalm. The devotional portion is a quick read, but as with most of Spurgeon's work, it's a lot to meditate on.

One of my favorite Psalms, Psalm 37 includes Spurgeon's reflections on the popular verse,

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4).

Spurgeon's reflections on this verse express God's care for our desires and the inner working of sanctification as our desires come into alignment with God's. He writes,

"Our innermost desires are here meant, not our casual wishes; there are many things that nature might desire but grace would never permit us to ask for; these deep, prayerful, asking desires are those to withe the promise is made."

The devotion accompanied by the Psalm is the perfect bite-size piece of scripture and reading to reflect on with a morning cup of coffee.

On the day I read Psalm 37 and this passage, I was left considering my deep, prayerful, asking desires all day long.

This led to time in prayer and that prayer was answered; I truly experienced the mutual delight in asking and receiving that Spurgeon presents alongside this Psalm.

The actual book is slim, easy to bring with you.

My little sister keeps a "car Bible" for her lunch breaks at work and I picture "Spurgeon and the Psalms" as the perfect little book for a bit of truth and God's Word in the midst of a busy schedule without having to lug around an ESV study Bible.
