When I started my blog in 2020 I would excitedly tell people I had *finally* decided to start a blog. The response I got most of the time was, "do people still read blogs?"
There's a rumor going around that it's too late to start a blog. It's not!
When I started my blog it actually came out of a bit of a failure.
Let me explain...
I had already contributed to a few publications and thought of myself as a writer. But no one else would say I was a writer because I didn't actually have my writing anywhere. My close friends and family members knew my dream was to write, but beyond that, I was a girl working at a flower shop.
An opportunity arose when I met an editor at a big publication that would have been my dream to write at. They were looking for contributors and I knew I was the perfect fit. She was so excited that we got connected, gave me her email and said, "send me your blog!"
Immediate panic set in. I had blogs in the past but I always ended up giving up on them because I thought, like everyone else,
blogging is dead.
I went ahead and sent her an email, sheepishly admitting I didn't have my writing anywhere
for the world to see, asking if I could send her some writing samples, and never heard back.
I learned that day that blogging is far from dead, actually, if one of your goals is to be a writer anywhere else the best place to flex is on your own blog.
That missed opportunity taught me that a blog is a lot of things. It can be an outlet for your ideas, a creative promise kept to yourself, a business card, a growing & evolving online portfolio and more.
Fast forward to present day–I've been blogging for two years. I've worked with some of my dream publications and just the other day I received this email:
"I love your website, it looks like you've done a lot of the work we need."
If you want to open yourself up to countless writing opportunities, grow your ability to write consistently, and create a home for your work–blogging is for you!
As the Chinese proverb says, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."
The same is true for blogging. Start your blog in 2022!
